Looking for inspiration to make an impact in the world you live in? Show me how!
I'd like to introduce you to Blake Mycoskie, Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS. What is TOMS, you make ask? TOMS is a highly successful international business that sells shoes while making a difference to millions of lives. TOMS is built on Blake's ingenious 'One for One' proposition that has become a global movement. For every pair of shoes someone buys, TOMS donates a brand new pair to a child in need somewhere in the world. Visit and support TOMS here: http://www.toms.com/
TOMS beginnings are rooted in a holiday in Argentina that Blake took back in 2006. Whilst on his travels, Blake was approached by a charity asking for unwanted shoes that would then be distributed to the local people in need. Blake was happy to make a contribution but also asked if he could go with the team when they distributed the shoes. That was a life-changing event for Blake, as he witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes - some having to walk miles every day barefoot and with injuries and infections. These children were happy to accept any shoes available, no matter the condition and whether they fitted or not. He also noticed that these children were reliant on the shoe donations from the charity which was working as hard as it could to canvas donations in order to keep going. Blake returned back home with his mind focused on finding a solution that would meet the needs of both the children and the supply of shoes. It proved to be a simple yet revolutionary answer: to create a for-profit business that was sustainable - for every pair of shoes sold, a pair would be donated to a child in need. The name TOMS is derived from Shoes for Tomorrow.
The success that followed was a phenomena to behold and I encourage you to read the full story of how people and businesses came to support TOMS. People were touched with compassion by the cause behind this business customers buying and other businesses offering their services for free in order to be part of making a difference. To date, over 2 million pairs of shoes have been donated to children in need with Blake leading the way but involving his team in each and every shoe drop.
Following the success of TOMS, and from his travels around the world where Blake recognised that there were other vitals needs, he developed TOMS Eyewear that was based on the same One for One principle - helping to give sight to someone in need for every pair of eyewear purchased. Knowing that this One for One principle was something that could be applied by others to further impact people with need, he wrote his first book, Start Something That Matters, which laid the foundation for a global movement.
